Sammy Sylvester, producer, songwriter and instrumentalist not only enjoys all genres of music, but creates, writes, plays and produces it all as well. His love of R&B, Jazz, Blues, Funk and Rock began from an early age. He may have been “unique” in his style, growing up on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean where Calypso and Reggae reign but he has always embraced music as he does people. He grew up listening to Yellow Jackets, Sting, Enya, Spyro Gyra, and a host of big haired 80’s bands that would remain nameless.
Sammy grew up playing every instrument under the sun in church in Trinidad. This foundation has been a steady force, helping as he pursued his dream of living abroad. He moved to the US in 1992 and has been moving full steam ahead ever since.
If asked, Sammy would say he is first and foremost a bassist but his gift of playing the guitar, piano and drums is just as evident. His ability to “make” the instrument harmonize in ways that seem impossible is just one of his tools. He has been musically influenced by a lifetime of learning and absorbing the artistry of some of the world's most respected musicians such as Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, (including his mentor "Bass Legend” and producer/song writer Tommy Sims). With such a variety, his matchless and distinctive sound is derived.
His love for all types of music is reflected in the various acts he has worked with. He has produced, written for or played with Kirk Whalum, CeCe Winans, Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Toby Mac and, Michael McDonald. His relational method of playing, writing and production come from life lessons. Not sweating the little things is a part of his Caribbean heritage. “Relax. It’s not that deep,” is a classic Sammy saying.
The independent artists he has worked with find him “ambitiously perfectionistic”. When he knows where a project needs to go, he won’t stop until it is fully accomplished.
His writing and production style stretches across each artist that he is blessed with the opportunity to produce but also arrange, develop and bring to life addictive lyrics and melodies to the likes of Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Acoustic.
Not only has Sammy produced full CD’s, he has also produced live shows and assisted in the technical aspects of CMT’s Crossroads and Cross Country with Alison Kraus, 38 Special, Trace Adkins, Big and Rich, John Anderson and others. Sammy produced a Tornado Benefit Concert, featuring Vince Gill and Amy Grant along with Ruby Amanfu and Tommy Sims in 2007. His production on commercials and work on film projects continues to grow.
His more recent production of, This Christmas for Michael McDonald in December 2009 has fulfilled a lifelong dream. “Being in the studio, recording with a Legend is beyond one’s vocabulary.
Sammy continues to push the envelope and seek out innovative ways to express the music from within.
